About Nature’s Gold Apiary

Located in Elkton, MD, Nature’s Gold Apiaries is a local wild forage beekeeping operation that produces pure raw honey for their many valued customers scattered throughout surrounding counties in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

With a focus on sustainability, Nature’s Gold began with 4 hives in 2015 and has incrementally grown to currently more than 50 production hives.  Their queens are open-mated which encourages hybrid vigor but, as a result, cannot guarantee variety or genetic strain.

Their criteria for breeder colonies is very simple —

1. Must be productive colony.
2. Have low swarming tendancies.
3. Must not be aggressive (we work our bees in shirt sleeves)
4. Must survive winter with no treatment (winter is their evaluation grid- any hive that does not survive winter is eliminated from operation).

Nature’s Gold is committed to raising their bees the way they live in the wild, using no chemicals treatments and adding no foreign substances in their hives.  They do not push for huge colonies or max honey production but, rather, they focus on colony health and accelerating natural selection of hardy, local genetics.  Insufficient fall forage around their apiaries requires some fall feeding but they are working toward minimizing feeding as much as possible.

Their raw honey is not filtered or heated above temperatures found in the hive and contains all the enzymes and pollen that the bees put in.  And because their honey is unfiltered, it may crystallize, which is easily remedied by placing the honey container in warm water to re-liquify.

In addition to selling their raw, unfiltered honey, Nature’s Gold Apiaries sells Nucleus Colonies and Queens, removes honeybee colonies from structures, and collects honeybee swarms.
